In our country, there are over two million homeless children today. Only about 500,000 are fortunate enough to get into foster care. Unfortunately, foster care’s not the most ideal place for kids. Once they reach the age of 18, and are in a position to age out of foster care, more than half of them don’t have high school degrees. They don’t have the skills to be self-reliant, but yet they’re put in a position where they have to be. Consequently, within a few short months, many of them are homeless. They become the forgotten children, living in the shadows, trying to figure out ways to provide for themselves, without the skill set. It doesn’t have to be that way. We can change the trajectory of their lives. All it takes is to reach out, reach across and help one kid. I know, I was one kid. A lot of people reached out and helped me, just one; they saw things in me I didn’t see in myself. They encouraged me. They helped me succeed. They taught me things that I needed to know. Everyone in this audience knows a kid that’s at risk. Every single one of you can reach out to help a kid and it can change their life.
Here is the challenge. Helping kids at risk is messy, it’s not perfect, it’s not cookie cutter. You have to tolerate them. You may be vulnerable, you may be exposed to things you’re not comfortable with, but in the end, connecting with these kids in a way where they can start believing in themselves will change their life. You can help change their life by loving them, by helping them, by serving them.
Be That ONE to Help just ONE.
